Ahmedabad Tops Tourist Destinations in Gujarat; ₹2077 Crore Allocated for Development

Gujarat’s tourism sector is abuzz with excitement as it continues to attract a growing number of visitors, both from within India and abroad. Between April 1 and June 10, 2024 (the peak summer vacation period), the state’s 12 major tourist attractions and pilgrimage sites welcomed over 1.35 crore tourists. This represents a significant 17% increase compared to the same period in 2023 when 1.14 crore tourists explored these destinations.

Among the popular attractions, the Statue of Unity (SoU), Atal Bridge, Riverfront-Flower Park, Kankaria Lake, Somnath Temple, Ambaji Temple, Pavagadh Temple, Dwarika Temple, Science City-Ahmedabad, Vadnagar, Gir, Devalia Safari and the Ahmedabad Metro Railway saw a surge in footfall. However, one city stood out as the preferred destination for travelers seeking the essence of Gujarat: Ahmedabad. Known for its rich cultural heritage and historical significance, Ahmedabad topped the list of tourist districts in the fiscal year 2023-24, followed closely by Banaskantha and Gir Somnath.

Recognizing the immense potential of Gujarat’s tourism industry, the government has allocated ₹2077 crore for tourism development in the upcoming fiscal year (2024-25). This substantial investment aims to enhance infrastructure at religious and cultural sites, promote adventure sports and support eco-tourism projects.

G20 Showcases Gujarat’s Rich Heritage

Gujarat’s global prominence received a significant boost during India’s Presidency of the G20 in 2023. The state hosted several G20 engagements, showcasing its rich culture and heritage to international delegates. Events were successfully held at Gujarat’s top destinations, including Dhordo in Kutch and the iconic Statue of Unity. G20 representatives explored attractions such as Dholavira, Modhera Sun Temple, historical sites in Ahmedabad, GIFT City and Dandi Kutir.
