Three labourers lost their lives and one was injured when a temporary steel and concrete structure at the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train construction site collapsed in Rajupura village near the Mahi River, close to Vasad town in Anand district.
The deceased were identified as Prahlal Baria from the Panchmahal district, Ranjit Yadav from Bihar and Kanu Dahya Solanki from Vasad. According to reports, Yadav and Solanki died instantly, while Baria died while receiving treatment at SSG Hospital in Vadodara.
Addressing a section of media, Anand district superintendent of police (SP) Gaurav Jasani said that the incident occurred around 5 pm. “Preliminary information suggested that four workers were trapped between the concrete blocks, after which our teams carried out the rescue operations,” he said.
He said that two workers who had been rescued from the debris of the concrete blocks were taken to a hospital for medical attention. Three deaths have been confirmed by Anand fire officer Dharmesh Gor.
“We rescued two labourers who were shifted to the hospital for treatment, where one of them succumbed. We also recovered two bodies at the site,” Gor said.
He also mentioned that at around 5:15 pm, the fire department’s team got a call and received details of the mishap.
The project’s observer and executor, National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL), said, “The incident occurred when a temporary structure of steel and concrete block being used for carrying out well foundation work fell down at the construction site.”
Cranes and excavators were used in the rescue efforts. “The NHSRCL team and locals from Rajupura village helped in the rescue operations as the concrete blocks were too heavy,” Gor added.
The rescue operations concluded at approximately 9:50 pm. Authorities stated that an investigation will be conducted to determine the cause of the incident.
Last year, a worker lost their life and six others were injured when a launching crane collapsed at a construction site in Karjan taluka, about 40 km from Vadodara in August.
