Gujarat is set to construct the world’s largest National Maritime Heritage Complex in the historic city of Lothal. With an estimated cost of Rs. 4,000 crore, this ambitious project aims to create a world-class tourist destination and showcase the rich maritime heritage and oceanic treasures of the region. The complex will span an expansive 400 acres of land, making it an impressive addition to the cultural landscape of Gujarat.
The National Maritime Heritage Complex is being constructed in three phases, with the first phase scheduled for completion by 2024. The construction work, which commenced in March 2022, is progressing steadily, and the project is expected to emerge as a prominent international tourist attraction. This endeavour is part of Gujarat’s efforts to promote tourism and revitalize its historical sites, following the success of the Statue of Unity, another popular tourist destination in the state.
The complex will comprise four theme parks, each offering a unique experience to visitors. These include the Memorial Theme Park, Maritime and Naval Theme Park, Climate Theme Park, and Adventure and Amusement Theme Park. Additionally, 14 galleries will be featured, illuminating the maritime heritage of coastal states in India ever since the Harappan era. These galleries will also highlight the marine legacies of other states and union territories under the central government’s jurisdiction.
One of the standout attractions of the National Maritime Heritage Complex will be the world’s tallest lighthouse, serving as a beacon of knowledge and exploration. Rising to an impressive height of 77 meters, the lighthouse will include a viewing gallery at 60 meters, providing visitors with a breathtaking panoramic view of the entire complex and surrounding area. The complex will boast an underwater-themed area, enabling visitors to embark on a captivating journey through the mysteries of the deep sea. Water pathways will offer a unique opportunity to explore the underwater world, adding an element of adventure to the overall experience.
To facilitate the understanding and appreciation of India’s maritime history, the complex will also feature a range of educational facilities. An institute and hostel will be established, providing a dedicated space for learning and research. Additionally, a Monument Theme Park with a 5D dome theatre will offer immersive experiences to visitors, further enhancing their understanding of the rich cultural and historical significance of maritime heritage.
Visitors to Lothal will not only have the opportunity to explore the National Maritime Heritage Complex but can also enjoy a grand garden tour during their visit. Two world-class hotels, known as “Museumotel,” will be designed based on the museum and adventure park theme, offering 100 rooms for a comfortable and memorable stay.
The National Maritime Heritage Complex in Lothal holds immense promise for both locals and tourists alike. Lothal, which was once adorned with flags from 84 countries as it was an influential trading capital connecting Middle East and South Asia, will soon reclaim its position as a symbol of India’s maritime power and prosperity.
