The Gujarat State School Trustees’ Association, an association of private school trustees, has recommended that the base annual fees in schools set by the state education department be raised by 50%.
The Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB) recently invited suggestions from private schools and guardians of students on the revision of base fees.
The committee set up to revise the base fees will consider these suggestions before submitting its final report by December 31. In 2017, the state education department had set the base fees per student for private schools at Rs 15,000 for primary schools, Rs 25,000 for secondary schools and Rs 30,000 for higher secondary schools.
The school association now wants these to be raised to Rs 22,500, Rs 30,000 and Rs 37,500, respectively. They also want the base fees for the science stream of secondary schools to be Rs 45,000.
If a school intends to charge higher than the base fees, they need to apply to the fee regulatory committee for ratification. If the annual fee sought per student is lower than the base fees, schools just need to convey this to the education department.
The Gujarat State School Trustees’ Association had earlier written to the state education minister to increase fees of grant-in-aid schools. About 30% of these schools have opted for higher fees. The association wants to raise Class 12 monthly fees and per term lab fees. The government has not increased the fees of these schools for the past seven years.
The government established the grant-in-aid school system, but gave schools the option to charge higher fees to decrease its financial burden. The fee structure for such schools was fixed by the state government in 2017.
