The Election Commission (EC) will hold a press conference at 12 pm today to announce the long-awaited schedule for the upcoming Gujarat asembly elections. The term of the 182-member Gujarat Assembly ends on February 18, 2023.
It was earlier expected that EC will anounce the Gujarat poll schedule along with Himachal Pradesh election dates, however it did not happen. The oposition parties in Gujarat alleged that the delay in announcing the elections dates in Gujarat is an effort to help the ruling BJP.
The elections in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh were held simultaneously in 1998, 2007, and 2012. Both the states polled on different dates in 2017.
In 2017, the BJP formed the government in Gujarat after winning 99 seats. Congress won 77 and NCP bagged one seat. Bhartiya Tribal Party and Independent candidates won two and three seats respectively.
This time around, the election in Gujarat is said to be a two-cornered fight between new entrant, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), and the ruling BJP.
