Three police constables in Gujarat’s Botad district have been charged with murder after a 28-year-old man tragically lost his life due to an alleged custodial assault. The incident was reported by a police official on Tuesday.
According to a police official, the incident took place on April 14 when Padharshi was picked up by the three constables, Amiraj Boricha, Rahil Sidatar, and Nikulsinh Jadhav, for questioning in connection with a case.
The police official stated that Padharshi was severely beaten up in custody and died on May 14 at a hospital in Ahmedabad.
Botad district Superintendent of Police Kishor Baloliya confirmed that an FIR had been filed against the accused at the Botad Town police station on Monday night. According to the FIR, the constables visited Padharshi’s residence in Botad town on April 14 to gather information about an unknown person in connection with the case.
However, when Padharshi denied having any knowledge about the individual, the trio demanded the registration papers for his motorcycle. Since they were not in uniform, Padharshi requested to see their identity cards, which allegedly angered the accused, who then began assaulting him and subsequently took him to the police station.
Padharshi was released on the same day but informed his family that he was brutally beaten in custody, with the accused smashing his head against a wall during questioning. After his health deteriorated, Padharshi was referred to a hospital in Botad on April 17 and then to a government hospital in Bhavnagar City, where he was diagnosed with a brain haemorrhage. On April 20, he was referred to the Ahmedabad Civil Hospital, where he underwent brain surgery and was kept on ventilator support until his death on May 14.
The three accused constables have been booked for the murder of Padharshi, as per the statement given by Baloliya. The case highlights the issue of police brutality and raises concerns about the need for strict measures to prevent such incidents.
