Ankit Rawal, who worked for a private company in Gujarat, was hit and killed by a speeding truck in the early hours of Friday near Asola Phata at Dewulgaon Raja in Buldhana district.
According to the police, Rawal and 10 to 12 other passengers on an Aurangabad-bound private luxury tours bus were able to escape unharmed when their vehicle overturned while attempting to pass two trucks and braking sharply. The bus toppled over onto its side.
Rawal helped the remaining passengers exit the bus. He was on the phone notifying family members about the accident when the truck hit him while he was standing on the other side of the median.
According to assistant police inspector Dattatreya Waghmare of Dewulgaon Raja police station, Rawal is likely to have not seen the truck. “The truck was heading to Nagpur from Nashik with a consignment of onions. The driver saw the accident and people on the road but Rawal was on the other side which the trucker failed to see,” said Waghmare.
The bus picked up a few passengers on the way back after travelling from Aurangabad to Nagpur for a wedding. Along with Rawal, two other members of the e-way rescue crew came dangerously close to being run over by the same truck as the driver struggled to control its pace. According to the police, the injured were taken urgently to Jalgaon and Sindhkhed Raja hospitals.
“One of the two bus drivers and a conductor suffered some injuries,” said Waghmare, adding that an offence has been registered against the bus driver and the trucker.
