Gujarat will be hosting the National Games 2022, which will take place from September 27 to October 10. Interestingly, this year, Indian traditional sports, Mallakhamba, and Yogasana, will be included in the event for the first time ever. Gujarat Olympic Association collaborated with the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) for the inclusion of these sports.
Although the two indigenous sports have been included earlier in events on a domestic level, their incorporation in the National Games will provide a huge boost for the two industries. Mallakhamba and Yogasana both were part of Khelo India Youth Games as well as 35th Games in Kerala.
Rajeev Mehta, Secretary General, IOA, said, “These are going to be the best ever National Games by far. The Gujarat Government ably supported by their State Olympic Association and other officials are already working day and night to make the Games a spectacle for fans. This will showcase Gujarat’s ability, infrastructure, culture and traditions. The IOA is and will always stand steadfastly by them to ensure proper coordination on technical matters as well as sharing experience and expertise wherever necessary.”
This year’s National Games will have a total of 36 sporting events of different categories. These events will be hosted in 6 cities, including Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Surat, Vadodara, Rajkot, and Bhavnagar.
