Gujarat Logs 21,225 New Covid Infections, 16 Deaths

Gujarat recorded 21,225 coronavirus cases – a decline of 13% from yesterday’s tally of 24,485 – and 16 deaths in the last 24 hours. With 16 Covid-19 fatalities, one of the highest tolls in a single day in recent months, the number of deaths climbed to 10,215 in Gujarat, the state health department said in a release.

The 16 people who succumbed to the infection were from Ahmedabad (8), Surat (4), Vadodara (2), Bhavnagar (1), Kheda (1). Besides 16 deaths, as many as 172 patients are on ventilator support.

With today’s update of daily cases, the state’s active cases tally went up to 1,16,843.  No details on Omicron infections were provided in past two weeks. The state health minister said as it is suspected that 70-80% of the daily Covid cases are Omicron infections, there is no longer a need for differentiation.

Yet again, Ahmedabad city remained the biggest contributor with 8,629, though it was a decline of 12 from yesterday’s 9,837 cases. At present, Ahmedabad is seeing the highest weekly TPR at nearly 25%, followed by Vadodara at 23.80%, Gandhinagar 19.16% and Bharuch 15%, as per the Union Ministry of Health website.

Scenario Across India

India added nearly 3.50 lakh new Covid cases today, a nine percent jump from yesterday’s 3.17 lakh cases which was also the highest in eight months. With a tally of 3.91 crore cases, India is the second worst-hit country after the US.

The active cases now comprise 5.23% of the total infections, while the national coronavirus recovery rate has decreased to 93.50%. The daily positivity rate is up from 16.41% to 17.94% while the weekly positivity rate was recorded at 16.56%.
