Health department employees in Gujarat, serving at district Primary Health Centres (PHCs) and Community Health Centres (CHCs), submitted memorandums at district offices on Monday, announcing plans to march to Gandhinagar on March 20 to protest over pay and other issues.
The employees are demanding a technical skill-based pay scale and the abolition or exemption of departmental examinations.
The Gujarat Rajya Arogya Karmachari Mahasangh has initiated an indefinite strike starting Monday to press for their demands.
Key demands include inclusion in the technical cadre, an increase in the current grade pay of 1900 for multipurpose health workers (MPHW) and female health workers (FHW) to 2800, and an increase in the current grade pay of 2400 for multipurpose health supervisors, female health supervisors, and district-level supervisors to 4200.
Additionally, they seek exemption from departmental examinations for the mentioned cadres, as well as for administrative and financial issues concerning staff nurses under the Panchayat system.
The employees had previously protested in Gandhinagar in September 2022. At that time, with assembly elections approaching, the government held closed-door discussions to address their concerns.
However, with key demands remaining unresolved after more than two years, the employees have now declared their intent to march to Gandhinagar to press for their rights.
