The Gujarat High Court has issued notices to the state government, the Ahmedabad Police Commissioner and others regarding a habeas corpus petition filed by a man alleging that his daughter absconded with a priest from the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), taking gold and cash and is being unlawfully confined.
On Tuesday, the government, Ahmedabad police commissioner, Meghaninagar police station inspector and nine other respondents—including priests from the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON)—were sent notices by the bench of Justices Sangeeta Vishen and Sanjeev Thaker, seeking a response by January 9.
A habeas corpus petition is a judicial remedy that asks for a directive to bring someone who has been illegally imprisoned or gone missing.
According to the petitioner, an ex-Armyman, his adult daughter was brainwashed by certain priests at the ISKCON Temple on the S G Highway in the city and as a result, she eloped with one of them on July 27, 2024, taking Rs 3,62,000 in cash and 230 grammes of gold from his residence.
Even after five or six months, the petitioner said, he is still not receiving any concrete information regarding the corpus’s life and the police have not done anything to locate her.
“The petitioner is fearing about the life of the corpus and as per the say of the petitioner, the corpus is given drugs daily,” said the plea.
