The Gujarat Government has authorised the extension of Surat International Airport by allocating Rs 215 crore for land acquisition on Wednesday. The decision is now going to permit the acquisition of 80,643 square metres of private land in Magdalla, which involves 20 survey numbers.
The Collector’s office had recently convened a meeting of Civil Aviation Department officials to complete administrative processes.
According to sources, the government has given the go-ahead to finalise an agreement with the Airport Authority of India by December 2024. For the fiscal year 2023–2024, a budget of Rs 215 crore has been allocated to permanently acquire private land needed for the airport’s expansion.
In order to obtain objections from concerned landowners, the Land Acquisition Officer will subsequently send out a notification in accordance with Section 10 of the Land Acquisition Act. The editing process will then begin.
The acquisition will move forward under the 2013 acquisition rules, guaranteeing that compensation is given under the regulations. The Airport Authority of India intends to equip Surat Airport with CAT-1 approach lights after acquiring the required land.
Given the airport’s proximity to the sea, visibility is often compromised outside the monsoon season. By improving visibility in adverse weather circumstances such as heavy rain and dense fog, the CAT-1 lights will guarantee safer flight operations without the need for diversions.
