When Gujarat Police arrested Rahul Singh Jat for the rape and murder of a teenager, little did they know that this one murder was just the tip of the iceberg; there was more to it. As they carried out further investigation and questioned the killer, he confessed to killing five others.
Rahul Singh Jat, a man from Rohtak, Haryana, was detained in Vapi, Gujarat, earlier this month for allegedly raping and killing a 19-year-old female near railway tracks in Valsad. Police were able to prove his involvement in previously committed four murders, including one rape on a train in Maharashtra, Karnataka, West Bengal and Telangana, during interrogation and the investigations that followed.
According to police, Jat killed a woman in Telangana just two days before his arrest.
Following the discovery of a 19-year-old girl’s death near the tracks near Udvada railway station on November 14, an investigation was launched, leading to Jat’s detention at Gujarat’s Vapi train station. According to the police, the girl was raped, killed, and attacked from behind as she was on her way home from tutoring that evening.
Police sources claim that while the girl was making her way home, Jat attacked her while she was on the phone. The girl was then raped and strangled by him. The man repeatedly performed the horrific act on the teen’s corpse for almost two hours after she passed away.
Jat walked to the closest store and ate breakfast when he was hungry. After purchasing a water bottle and a cold beverage, he returned to the location to carry out the horrifying act. But when he noticed people congregating close to the dead, he left his possessions behind and ran away.
According to Valsad Superintendent of Police (SP) Karanraj Vaghela, the t-shirt and bag that Jat left at the crime scene served as crucial clues for the police. He also claimed that because he moved about a lot, it was challenging for the police to apprehend him.
In a coordinated effort by municipal and railway police, Jat was taken into custody from the parking lot of the Vapi railway station in Valsad on Sunday evening. Jat moved around a lot and was constantly on the move. At least four cases of looting and murder aboard trains and at railway stations in Karnataka, West Bengal, Telangana, and Maharashtra have been linked to him, the SP stated.
According to police, between October 17 and 21, Jat sexually assaulted and killed a woman on a train headed for Kanyakumari near the Solapur railway station in Maharashtra. He strangled a traveller in a Karnataka train compartment for people with disabilities on October 25. He fatally stabbed an older man on a Katihar Express train near the Howrah railway station in West Bengal on November 19. On November 24, Jat looted a woman and murdered her on a train near Secunderabad railway station.
According to the SP, he was apprehended following a thorough search that involved police units from Karnataka, Rajasthan, and Haryana, as well as an examination of the footage from 2000 CCTV cameras in Vapi, Valsad, Surat, and Udvada.
According to the police, Jat raped women, particularly in the carriages for passengers with disabilities, and stole from victims whenever he saw them alone. They also said that it was difficult to apprehend him because he was constantly on the go and primarily slept on trains and at train stations.
“Jat committed murder and looting while travelling by train. Last year, he made four or five trips to Surat, Valsad, and Vapi. He had come here to pick up his pay from his job at a hotel. During this visit, he sexually assaulted and killed the 19-year-old female,” the SP stated.
According to SP Vaghela, Jat admitted to five murders in a single month and had over a dozen charges filed against him in Haryana, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh.
According to the SP, the serial killer was also imprisoned in 2018–19 and 2024 in connection with instances involving illicit arms smuggling and truck theft in Rajasthan, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand. According to investigators, after being freed from prison, he raped and killed the teenager in Vapi.
Jat has been involved in theft and illegal activity since he was a young child and continued to study till Class 5. The family cut ties with him because they were troubled by his addictions.
