Gujarat Congress commenced the ‘Azadi Gaurav Yathra’ on Wednesday from Sabarmati Gandhi Ashram in Ahmedabad. The National Seva Dal President Lalji Desai, who hails from Gujarat, said, “Congress is launching this ‘padayatra’ or foot march from Gandhi Ashram to showcase the role played by the party in India’s freedom struggle and its contribution in nation-building post-independence”.
The entire 1,171-km yatra is being coordinated by the Seva Dal, the social services wing of the Congress party. The padayatra will pass through five districts in North Gujarat and will be taken forward by the Rajasthan Congress unit from the Ratanpur border on April 15. The yatra will pass through four states before reaching the final destination Raj Ghat in Delhi on June 1.
Hundreds of Congress Seva Dal members attended a prayer meet organised at the Hriday Kunj in the Ashram this morning before embarking on the padayatra while holding the party’s flag in their hands.
