The Indian Coast Guard (ICG)’s Sea Rescue Sub Centre on Wednesday stated that it received a call about a medical emergency involving a patient on board the commercial vessel– Helen.
On its way from Sikka to Durban, South Africa, the Panamanian-flagged ship was about 200 kilometres from Porbandar, when the officer in-charge sought the evacuation of a fellow Indian officer for medical attention as his right hand’s first finger had been amputated.
Interceptor Boat C-161 of the ICG was immediately sent out to reach the merchant vessel by dawn on April 26, 2023.
The officer received first aid treatment in a Coast Guard interceptor boat before being safely evacuated from the vessel and transported to Porbandar. Early in the morning, the officer arrived in Porbandar and was sent to the local authorities for additional care.
