Gujarat: CM Visits Flood-Hit Regions; State Deploys Officials for Relief

| Updated: August 29, 2024 18:42

Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel is on a visit to the flood-affected areas of Jamnagar, Devbhoomi Dwarka and Vadodara to review the situation following extensive rainfall.

He is expected to go by helicopter to Jamnagar first, where he will meet with local authorities to discuss the region’s situation.

Following the meeting in Jamnagar, he will travel by helicopter to Khambhaliya at 5 PM, where rainfall has reached 944 mm, the highest in the state over the last five days. He will meet with district officials to get updates on the situation in Devbhoomi Dwarka and to provide any required assistance.

He is scheduled to return to Jamnagar later in the evening and then travel to Vadodara to have a review meeting about the ongoing relief efforts in Vadodara city and district. During this visit, the Chief Minister will be accompanied by Chief Secretary Rajkumar.

State government moves officers in Vadodara

In order to assist and coordinate aid and rescue efforts in flood-affected Vadodara, the state government has sent in-charge secretary Vinod Rao, Chief Minister’s Officer on Special Duty (OSD) Atul Gor and RAC Sudhir Patel.

Vinod Rao, who was once the city’s municipal commissioner, is staying in Vadodara and giving his expertise. Under the supervision of Resident Additional Collector Dr. BS Prajapati, a dedicated cell has been established at the district collector office to address concerns.

22 officers have been selected by the district collector to evaluate the losses suffered during the calamity. The task of coordinating with the Disaster Branch has been given to Deputy District Election Officer Vivek Tank.

Sanghavi visits Vadodara

Due to waterlogging in Vadodara, only three water pumping stations—Kapuri and Chhani among them—are closed. Other pumping stations are now functioning. The remaining three water supply pumping stations will begin operating after the waterlogging has cleared. 33 of the 34 water distribution centres are back in operation.

During his visit to Vadodara, MoS Home Harsh Sanghavi provided this information, just hours after the city’s floodwater receded.

Sanghavi briefing media

Regarding the power supply, Sanghavi said 118 feeders had been closed during waterlogging, out of them only 12 feeders are shut now. He indicated that by midnight today, all feeders where the waterlogging ended would begin to operate again. 40 teams are at work and 10 more are being called in to restore power by restarting feeders and transformers.

Sanghavi said that directives had been issued to gather JCBs and dumper trucks from nearby industrial facilities and enhance VMC’s resources for post-flood cleaning efforts. In addition to VMC’s current strength, he claimed that 48 JCBs, 78 dumpers and 62 tractors had already been acquired.

Sanghavi said that 11 deaths—11 of which were natural—were related to the flood situation.
