Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel on Thursday provided in-principle approval to the Rs 1,200 crore Vishwamitri Revival and Redevelopment Project. For over 10 years, there has been talk of this much-anticipated project, which would provide a thorough water management system.
He met at the district collectorate with high-ranking officials of the district administration and the Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) while he was in the city that had been devastated by flooding.
The project’s specifics were given to the media by Minister of State for Home Harsh Sanghavi, who is also in-charge of Vadodara.
“Permission for the Vishwamitri Revival and Redevelopment Project was requested from the Chief Minister, who in a matter of seconds gave in-principle approval to this project for the benefit of Vadodara’s citizens, approving the funding of Rs 1,200 crore for this project. This is a historical project as it will include studies on the river’s carrying capacity and other aspects,” he said.
He stated that the administration has been instructed to create a plan and submit it as quickly as possible.
Inspired by the Sabarmati Riverfront, VMC originally proposed the Vishwamitri Revival project in 2008; however, it never went further even with assistance from the state government. After the project was put on hold in 2016 due to environmental concerns, it was later included in the NRCP and Smart City scheme, and a Detailed Project Report (DPR) was finished in 2021. However, nothing further has happened with it since.
The Vishwamitri River’s water level is now at 24.60 feet, below the 26-foot danger mark as of this morning at 10 a.m. The river climbed up to 37 feet in the last few days due to significant rainfall and water discharge from the Ajwa dam, surpassing the 26-foot danger level on Tuesday morning.
