India celebrates August 3 as Indian Organ Donation Day. The Government attempts to create awareness about organ donation and enlarge the organ donor pool across the country.
In the last five years from 2019 to 2024, Gujarat registered 1654 organ donations from 537 braindead people. The organs were transplanted to the needy, giving them new lease of life through this unique and one of the noblest donation. The organsa transplanted include 908 kidnies, 468 livers, 117 hearts, 114 lungs, 14 pancreas, 9 small intestines and 24 hands.
From 2019 to 2021, there had been 170 donations. However, the Corona pandemic not only underlined the temporariness of the human life but also brought significant awareness among general public about organ donation. After the corona period, 367 organ donations took place from 2022 to 2024 (July) i.e. in 2.5 years.
NOTTO (National Organ Tissue and Transplant Organization) organises a programme to feliciate people and organizations who have done the best in various activities in the field of organ donation and transplant on 3rd August every year. On Indian Organ Donation Day this year, five individuals and organizations from Gujarat will be honored for doing commendable work in the field of organ donation.
Dr. Pranjal Modi,Director of I.K.R.D.C will be hounoured for “Exemplary Work in Field of Transplantation” whereas Ahmedabad Civil Hospital will be felicitated for Best Retrieval Hospital. Similarly, Surat Civil Hospital will be felicitated for Best Brain Stem Death Committee, Dr. Ketan Nayak for Bbest coordinator and Donate Life organization will be acknowledged for best charitable organization.
Gujarat Health Minister Mr. Rishikesh Patel said that the state of Gujarat is becoming a leader in the field of organ donation with the activity of organ donation accelerating up to the district level.
Currently, the waitlist for organ donation in Gujarat has demands for 1865 kidney, 344 liver, 19 heart, 27 lung and 9 pancreas.
