After the conclusion of the ongoing Gujarat Assembly budget session, discussions regarding the expansion of the state cabinet have intensified. Reports confirmed that the announcement is expected in early April, with April 7 emerging as a probable date.
No official confirmation has been made as of now.
The Gujarat government presently comprises eight cabinet ministers apart from the chief minister, along with eight state-level ministers. The number is now set to increase, insiders revealed.
The decision follows directives from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) high command, which has assured former Congress leaders who defected to the BJP of their inclusion in the cabinet.
Despite dissatisfaction among senior BJP members over the induction of these turncoats, the leadership is determined to honour its commitment. Sources indicated that Dr CJ Chavda and Arjun Modhwadia are likely to secure positions in the cabinet.
Additionally, internal discussions within the party regarding the appointment of a new state BJP president remain unresolved, adding to the uncertainty. The high command has yet to finalise a name for the crucial role.
The upcoming expansion will also lead to the redistribution of key portfolios. Ministers holding multiple responsibilities are expected to see their workload reduced, with additional portfolios likely to be assigned to new appointees.
Amid ongoing speculation, the cabinet reshuffle may also witness the induction of a young leader who previously switched allegiance from Congress to the BJP.
This move is seen as an effort to increase youth representation within the government.
