Ahmedabad– With the 2024 Lok Sabha elections approaching, the race for the Bharuch Lok Sabha seat in Gujarat is heating up. The children of Ahmed Patel, a late Congress leader, are now vying for the seat.
Faisal Patel, Ahmed Patel’s son, has put up hoardings in Bharuch with the slogan “Main to ladunga” (I will fight). His sister, Mumtaz Patel, has been active in the region for the past year through her father’s social organizations and trusts. She is also a member of the All India Congress Committee.
Ahmed Patel, a senior Congress leader, died during the COVID-19 pandemic. His family did not contest the 2023 Gujarat Assembly elections, but Faisal and Mumtaz are now both seeking the Bharuch Lok Sabha seat.
Faisal’s meeting with Gujarat BJP President CR Patil last year fueled speculation that he was interested in a political career. The hoardings make it clear that he is serious about running for Lok Sabha.
Mumtaz has been active in the region through her father’s social organizations and trusts. She is also a member of the AICC.
Former Congress President Arjun Modhwadia believes that Mumtaz would be a strong candidate for Bharuch and that she is the most suitable person to carry on her father’s legacy. Congress media spokesperson Manish Doshi said,
“The party will take a decision on the candidate after consulting with local leaders and workers.”
Ahmed Patel won the Bharuch Lok Sabha seat for the first time in 1977, becoming the youngest MP in the country. The BJP’s current MP, Mansukh Vasava, and AAP MLA Chetan Vasava are also vying for the seat. Both parties are trying to woo the tribal vote bank.
