There are around 33,000 government schools in the state of Gujarat, and around 700 primary schools including 100 schools in Kutch, have just one teacher who takes all the classes.
The government replied to several questions Congress MLAs had demanded, stating that these schools, Classes I to VIII are handled by one teacher only. The government replied stating that even in the state capital there are nine schools functioning with one teacher, while this number was four in Ahmedabad.
The government replied that there are two districts Kheda and Bhavnagar that do not have even one school with only one teacher. Eight other districts have less than 10 schools with only one teacher.
Congress leaders suggested that schools that are operated with one teacher which is affecting the quality of education and so when students come to Class X, they can barely read or write.
