The Virsad police station in Anand was in for major embarrassment when it was revealed that 144 kg ganja valued at Rs 8.60 lakh in their custody was stolen. The Virsad police registered an offence against unidentified persons under sections 454, 457 and 380 of the Indian Penal Code. The ganja was kept in a room located just behind the police station.
Head Constable Shobhana Vaghela stated in her complaint that on Saturday morning when she arrived at the police station, she noticed that one bag of ganja lying outside the custody room. On investigating further, she noticed that the iron grills of the window of the room where the ganja was kept were broken and bricks near the window were removed.The seized ganja pertained to a case registered in September 2018 under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act where a total of 56 bags of ganja were seized. Of the 56 bags, four bags containing 34.29 kg ganja worth Rs 2.05 lakh, 36.39 kg ganja worth Rs 2.18 lakh, 33.90 kg ganja worth Rs 1.98 lakh and 39.60 kg ganja worth Rs 2.37 lakh respectively, were missing in the theft.
