A woman died and eight others were injured at the foot of Pavagadh hill in Panchmahal district of Gujarat on Thursday afternoon. The incident occurred when a newly constructed dome-shaped structure made of stones suddenly collapsed.
Panchmahal collector Ashish Kumar has initiated an investigation into the matter.
The Pavagadh hill is home to the temple of Goddess Kali, which attracts thousands of devotees daily. The structure in question was a restroom for devotees located at the foothill of Pavagadh, called Machi, constructed with carved stones.
“Nine devotees, including women, were crushed under the debris when the structure suddenly collapsed on them. A woman lost her life, while eight others were first referred to a hospital in Halol town and they were later shifted to Vadodara for better treatment,” said Kumar. The deceased has been identified as Gangaben Devipujak, 40 years old.
Kumar has asked engineers from the Road and Building department, along with concerned contractors, to visit the spot. An inquiry has also been ordered to determine the exact cause of the tragedy.
Last year in June, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the redeveloped temple of Shree Kalika Mata atop the Pavagadh hill.
