GTU Professor Terminated Following Sexual Harassment Allegations Against Colleague

| Updated: January 31, 2025 16:27

The Gujarat Technological University has terminated the services of Professor S D Panchal, Director of the School of Engineering and Technology, following an internal inquiry’s confirmation of allegations of sexual harassment against him.

“The termination is based on the ICC (Internal Inquiry Committee) findings, which proved him guilty, and after considering his arguments,” said K N Kher, Registrar has said.

Kher was quoted in a section of the media that Professor Panchal was dismissed on Wednesday.

According to information, the case came to light when one of the female faculty members filed a formal complaint. In her complaint, backed with evidence, she detailed persistent harassment by Professor Panchal during her PhD.  She also held that the harassment continued after she joined the faculty. Professor Panchal was her PhD guide.

The woman alleged that he used to send her messages daily on various platforms including Telegram, asking her to meet him at a hotel to discuss her PhD. This, according to her, led to severe mental distress.

According to the formal complaint, Panchal exploited his authority and often visited her cabin at times when she was alone. He tried to gain her trust by telling her that he felt isolated and eventually had suicidal thoughts.

The complainant, initially remained silent, as she had fear of repercussions on her PhD degree.

She also alleged that his harassment was aggravated during the final stage of her PhD degree.

He used to claim about his influence with the Vice-Chancellor, avoiding authorities to take action against him.

Following the victim’s firm rejection in 2022, Panchal had a drastic turn. He started stalking, blackmailing and threatening her career and subsequently, attempted to arrange a compromise with the help of another female staff member.

The committee had a detailed investigation following the victim’s allegations. They gathered various testimonies from all faculties and staff members.

Meanwhile, Panchal was shifted to the Gujarat Power Engineering and Research Institute (GPERI) and was also provided with an opportunity to present his defence.

However, the committee found the allegations valid despite his explanations.

Later, the findings were submitted to the university’s board of Management after which they officially decided to fire him from his job, reinforcing zero-tolerance policy on sexual harassment.

Professor Panchal has served in different capacities including acting vice-chancellor, BOG member, academic council member and varsity registrar.
