The district special court this morning has sentenced Fenil Goyani to death for the killing of 21-year old Grishma Vekaria. The court had convicted Goyani of the crime on April 21 and today it has decided on his punishment. This decision definitely brings some sense of closure to Grishma’s family, who had been demanding capital punishment for Goyani.
This order follows several trials where Grishma’s family had demanded capital punishment for Goyani. On the other hand, Goyani’s lawyer had argued that the young man should get minimal punishment.
On February 12, Grishma Vekaria was killed in public when Fenil Goyani slit her throat and stabbed her. He later attempted suicide by cutting his wrists. The entire incident has been recorded on camera. He was rushed to hospital after the incident was reported and given treatment. Goyani was discharged from the hospital on was arrested by police on February 16.
The police charged him under Indian Penal Code Sections 302, 307, 354(d) 1 (E), 342, 504 and 506(2) based on a complaint lodged by Dhruv at the Kamrej station. They also submitted a charge sheet of 2,500 pages at the Kathor court in the district, within five days of the incident. The elaborate charge sheet prepared by the officials consisted of statements of over 190 witnesses, documentary evidence, scientific and medical evidence and CCTV footage.
Goyani was charged with murder and his trial has been been going on ever since the incident. Goyani was also suspected to have stabbed Grishma’s brother Dhruv and uncle Shaileshbhai Vekariya, who were trying to rescue the victim.
