Gujarat: Govt Mandates Panic Buttons And GPS Trackers In Public Transport

| Updated: December 11, 2021 09:50

The Gujarat government is all set to mandate for public transport vehicles to have panic buttons and a global positioning system (GPS) trackers for the safety of passengers.

It was supposed to be implemented by the central government before four years, however, the state government has now taken it in its hands.

The process of installing panic buttons and GPS tracking in old and new buses, taxis, has already been initiated by the state home department.

“The home department and transport department will develop a new centralized control centre, which will record the locations of vehicles in which the panic button has been hit,” a source said about the move.

Reportedly, the state transport department is responsible for putting a system in place for tracking public transport vehicles. Whenever a passenger presses the panic button, the transport department and police control rooms will be alerted.
