The government has come up with a scheme to sell rice at a subsidized rate of Rs 29 per kg to ease the burden of rising food prices on the common man. The rice will be sold under the Bharat brand and will be available in 5 kg and 10 kg packs. The scheme is expected to start in the first week of February.
The government will also grade the non-basmati aromatic rice varieties such as Govindbhog, Tulaipanji, Kataribhog, Radhunipagal, Kalonuniya, Kala Namak and others. This will help the farmers to get better prices and recognition for their produce. The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare has issued a notification in this regard.
The Bharat brand was launched on 6 November 2023 by the central government to provide affordable food items to the people. The government has already sold cheap wheat flour, onions, tomatoes and pulses under this brand. The addition of cheap rice will further reduce the inflationary pressure on the consumers. The retail prices of all kinds of rice are expected to fall soon.
