As the first phase under the redevelopment plan of Central Vista, touted as “New India’s ” power corridor, completes, the NDMC has decided that the iconic Rajpath in the capital will be known as “Kartavya Path”.
The revamping of Rajpath and Central Vista lawns in the heart of Delhi by the central government attracted much criticism. It is alleged that the government pays scant regard to heritage and history. Critics argued over the aesthetics of the project that envisages a new triangular Parliament building, a common central secretariat, a new prime minister’s residence and office, and a new vice-president’s enclave.
The whole area of Rajpath to be re-named Kartavya Path (Path of Duty), is in alignment with the present government’s push to do away with names and symbols reminiscent of the British and Mughal eras. The Kartavya path would lead from the Netaji statue to the Rashtrapati Bhavan and will be known as Kartavya Path.
Earlier, the Race Course Road’s name was changed to Lok Kalyan Marg. Indian prime minister’s residence is located on Race Course Road.
The reworked Rajpath will be opened to the public after a 20-month gap as Kartavya Path next week. The redeveloped road will have red granite walkways spread around 1.1 lakh square metres. Dotted with greenery all around, the road has 4,087 trees, 114 modern signages and stepped gardens, illuminated with 133 lamp posts.
There are dedicated vending zones which will serve food from 16 states. New blocks for public amenities and parking zones for more than 1000 cars will also be there.
