After a video of a store owner in Calangute, Goa, expressing support for the Pakistan cricket team went popular on social media, he was forced to apologise in front of the people and chant “Bharat Mata ki jai.”
On Thursday, a group of men coerced him into apologising and raising the slogan. This happened when a travel vlogger posted an undated video, in which a store owner in North Goa’s Calangute could be heard declaring that he was rooting for Pakistan’s cricket team because it was a Muslim neighbourhood.
The neighbouring nation was reportedly playing against New Zealand, at the time the video was taken. The vlogger can be seen conversing briefly with the man in the video. The vlogger asks the shop owner, “Who is playing? Are you cheering for New Zealand?” The man replies, “For Pakistan.”
The vlogger then asks him why, to which the man responds saying, “This is Muslim area.” A group of individuals approached the shop owner on Thursday and questioned him about supporting Pakistan, after this video went viral. On social media, a video of the group requiring the shop owner to apologise went viral.
The video shows a member of the group telling the man, “This entire village is Calangute. There is no Muslim lane or any other lane. Don’t divide the country based on religion.”
Afterwards, he is instructed to get on his knees and apologise to his compatriots. The shop owner is seen in the video reluctantly apologising before bowing down and holding his ears.
The group can also be seen forcing him to yell “Bharat Mata ki jai” in the video. An official of the local police department confirmed that no complaints have been made in relation to the incident.
