GIFT City, Gandhinagar is hosting the World Junior Chess Championship 2024. The event hosted 230 players from 46 countries, including India. State Minister of Sports Harsh Sanghvi hailed it as a morale booster for the young participants.
Sanghvi was present to welcome the players and emphasised that the championship provides an opportunity to meet junior chess players from around the world. He also highlighted that Gujarat is leading in organising sports events both nationally and internationally.
The tournament, organised in collaboration with the Gujarat State Chess Association (GSCA), has seen participation from players across the globe. Many of these players, guests of India, have won numerous medals in chess worldwide. These junior chess players, who are expected to play at the senior level in the future, have had their enthusiasm boosted at this event.
Harsh Sanghvi proudly stated that this is the first time Gujarat is successfully organising the World Chess Championship. The players have had the opportunity to experience Gujarati hospitality, food and culture. He also conveyed his congratulations to the Indian player Miss Divya, who is progressing as a winner in the ninth round of the competition. He expressed hope that she will win many medals for India in the future.
Furthermore, the Sanghvi revealed that the state government has planned to organise national and international tournaments in the coming years. Many successful events have already been organised in Gujarat with the cooperation of the state government and the association. These events aim to connect more and more youth of Gujarat in the field of sports.
Under the leadership of the All India Chess Federation (AICF) and the Federation Internationale des Echecs (FIDE), the prestigious World Junior Chess Championship 2024 is being organised at the GIFT City Club in Gandhinagar by the Gujarat State Chess Association (GSCA).
On this occasion, the secretary of the All India Chess Federation, Dev Patel and the organising secretary, Bhavesh Patel, along with players and coaches from various countries were present.
