Gandhinagar NLU Student Falls To Death From Hotel In Bhopal

| Updated: October 12, 2024 19:42

A student of National Law University (NLU) Gandhinagar, Gujarat, died after allegedly falling from the fourth floor of a hotel in Bhopal.

Identified as 19-year-old Tushar Mali, a resident of Pali district in Rajasthan, the victim was a first-year student at NLU-Gandhinagar, and he had travelled to Bhopal along with 83 other students from his university to participate in a sports competition being held at National Law Institute University (NLIU) in the Madhya Pradesh capital.

The students were staying at a hotel near Chetak Bridge in the business hub of the city.

SHO Govindpura Awadhesh Singh Tomar said that Tushar was ‘partying’ with 7-8 friends in a hotel room on the fourth floor when someone knocked on the door. Fearing that it was the warden, Tushar tried to escape by climbing out of the window to an iron scaffolding behind the hotel, said Tomar.

He took around 20 steps and reached a part of the scaffold that was open. Unaware of this, he fell around 60 feet. His friends rushed him to AIIMS-Bhopal, 6-km away, where he was declared dead on arrival.

Govindpura ACP Deepak Nayak said the hotel had installed the metal framework for cleaning and maintenance, but a portion of it was open, leading to Tushar’s fatal fall. Police are investigating why Tushar alone attempted to ‘escape’ through the window. They are speaking to the other students present in the room.

Govindpura police registered a case and handed over the body to the family after post-mortem examination.

SHO Tomar said that Tushar’s father, Kishan Mali, is a farmer and also runs a shop in Pali. His parents and sisters arrived in Bhopal and took the body back to Rajasthan for last rites.

No suicide note was found in the room, and Tushar didn’t leave any messages or mention any problems to his family on the call. This lack of clues has made the police even more suspicious about the circumstances surrounding his death.
