In view of rising cases of advertisements promoting betting and gambling, the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has issued an advisory which highlights that such illegal activities should not be advertised, promoted or endorsed in any way.
Such activities have both financial and socio-economic implications for the youth, according to the advisory.
The advisory states that betting and gambling are prohibited in the country under the Public Gambling Act, 1867. In spite of this, online betting platforms and apps continue to advertise betting and gambling either directly or by using gaming.
CCPA has said in the advisory that any advertisement or endorsement of unlawful activities, including betting and gambling, should be scrutinised rigorously.
If there is any violation found, strict measures would be taken as per the Consumer Protection Act, 2019. In such a case, action would be initiated against manufacturers, advertisers, publishers, intermediaries, social media platforms, endorsers, and other stakeholders.
