Union Minister Nitin Gadkari on Wednesday said two-wheeler manufacturers should provide helmet to the buyer of the vehicle at a discount or reasonable rate as many people die in road accidents simply for not wearing helmets.
Addressing a public gathering in New Delhi, Gadkari said 50,029 people lost their lives in accidents in the country in 2022 when they were not wearing helmets.
“I am thinking of requesting two-wheeler manufacturers… if they can give some reasonable discount on helmets to the purchaser of the vehicle then we can save the lives of the people,” he said.
The road transport and highways minister also highlighted the necessity to plan the parking arrangement for school buses.
Observing that severe fines for traffic violations have been imposed through the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act, 2019, he added, “But actually, effective enforcement is also a big challenge.”
Gadkari declared that he aims to establish a driving school in every taluka in the country.
As per the recently released “National Strategy for Prevention of Unintentional Injury” report by the Ministry of Health, road crashes account for over 43% of unintentional injury-related deaths in India, with overspeeding being the primary cause of these fatalities.
