Liam Payne, the British singer and the former One Direction star has died at the age of 31 after reportedly falling from a third-floor balcony at a hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, has left fans around the world in shock, with emerging details suggesting that Payne may have been under the influence of drugs and alcohol in his final moments.
Media outlets such as TMZ have reported that Payne displayed erratic behaviour before his death, allegedly smashing his laptop in the hotel lobby and needing to be escorted back to his room. Reuters also noted that local police were alerted to the presence of an “aggressive man” who was suspected to be intoxicated.
An Argentine news channel aired a distressing 911 call from the hotel manager to police, during which the manager described the singer’s behaviour. “We have a guest who is on drugs and is destroying the whole room, so we need someone to come,” the manager is heard saying. The call further revealed concerns for Payne’s safety due to the presence of a balcony in his room, with the manager adding, “When he is conscious, he is destroying the entire room.”
Shortly after this, a loud noise was reportedly heard from the back of the hotel. When police arrived, they discovered that a man had fallen from the balcony, later confirmed to be Liam Payne.
Fans quickly gathered outside the hotel, many visibly emotional, hugging and comforting each other as news of the tragedy spread.
Liam Payne leaves behind a young son, Bear, whom he shares with Girls Aloud singer and British TV personality Cheryl.
