Veteran Congress leader and former Governor of Gujarat between 27 November 2009 to 6 July 2014, Dr. Kamla Beniwal has passed away at Jaipur. She was 97. Dr. Beniwal was the first woman minister in Rajasthan in 1954 at the age of 27.
Born on 12 January 1927, Dr Kamla beniwal was a senior member of Indian National Congress party and a ltall eader from jat community. Prior to be appointed as Governor, she was Deputy Chief Minister of Rajasthan in 2003. Apart from Gujarat, she had been Governor of Tripura and Mizoram as well,
Dr Kamla Beniwal entered the realm of politics after winning the by-election from Amer assembly seat in 1954. Seven times MLA Dr. Beniwal, held various important departments including Home, Medical and Health, Education and Agriculture as minister. She was also the Revenue Minister in the Ashok Gehlot government.
Major accomplishments of Dr Kmala Beniwal’s political life are completing the creation of a district program of about 48,000 water harvesting plants in Rajasthan. She also played an important role in the establishment of the National Institute of Ayurveda and establishment of a Sanskrit University in Jaipur. She was an important leader of cooperative movement in Rajasthan.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar expressed grief over the demise Dr. Kamla Beniwal. Rahul Gandhi also paid rich tributes to the departed leader.
