Five Indian students, including two young women, have been arrested by Canadian police on charges of executing a scam in Canada’s largest casino. The accused, all currently in Canada on student visas, were apprehended at a casino in Rexdale, near Toronto. One of the accused was reportedly employed at the casino.
The Bureau of Investigation and Enforcement is investigating the case. The main accused is charged with orchestrating a scheme to win money from close associates while working in the casino. The arrested individuals include Agatha Varghese, a Malayalam girl; Tajveer Kaur, a Punjabi girl and Yakshu Nehra, Himanshu Tanwar and Parakh Raheja. The police have not released any additional information beyond the names of the accused. All aged between 21 and 25 have been charged with larceny over $5,000 and larceny under $5,000. They were released on the condition that they appear in court after their arrest.
The casino was opened last year. It is Canada’s largest casino, built at $1 billion and spread over 33 acres of land. The casino boasts 4800 slot machines and 145 live table games. Many Indian students frequent this casino, often staying all night with their groups. Some have fallen victim to casino addiction, gambling not for fun but in a bid to earn money, risking everything to win 50-100 dollars.
Despite the casino’s tight surveillance with around seven thousand cameras monitored round the clock, an Indian employee managed to set up a scam with his friends to win money. However, the scheme was exposed in due course, leading to their arrest.
