The nominations for the 67th Grammy Awards were announced on Friday, spotlighting both well-known and emerging Indian and Indian-origin talent. This year’s recognised artists include Ricky Kej, Anoushka Shankar, Varijashree Venugopal, Radhika Vekaria and Chandrika Tandon.
Three-time Grammy winner Ricky Kej has been nominated for the Best New Age, Ambient, or Chant Album with his album Break of Dawn. In the same category are Chapter II: How Dark It Is Before Dawn by sitarist, singer-songwriter and composer Anoushka Shankar; Warriors of Light by Indian-origin artist Radhika Vekaria; and Triveni by entrepreneur and artist Chandrika Tandon, created alongside flautist Wouter Kellerman and cellist Eru Matsumoto.
Anoushka Shankar also receives a second nomination for her collaboration with British multi-instrumentalist Jacob Collier on A Rock Somewhere, competing in the Best Global Music Performance category. This track features Bengaluru-based vocalist, flautist and composer Varijashree Venugopal, who celebrates her first Grammy nomination. Venugopal also contributed to Kej’s Break of Dawn.
Kej’s Grammy journey began in 2015 when he won for Winds of Samsara with Wouter Kellerman, followed by his 2022 win for Divine Tides, created with Stewart Copeland of The Police—both in the Best New Age Album category.
His third Grammy was awarded in 2023 for the immersive audio version of Divine Tides, recognised as Best Immersive Audio Album.
Although Indian artists are not featured in the Best Global Music Album category this year, the subcontinent is notably represented by Pakistani-origin, US-based artist Arooj Aftab, who has received two Grammy nominations.
Aftab is nominated for Best Alternative Jazz Album with Night Reign and for Best Global Music Performance with her song Raat Ki Rani, which joins Jacob Collier’s A Rock Somewhere among the contenders.
