A father-son pair of Congress leaders switched sides and joined the BJP in Surat on Wednesday. Niket Patel, a Congress leader, and his father Sunil Patel, a former Congress corporator in Surat Municipal Corporation, along with their supporters, were inducted into the BJP by state BJP president C R Paatil at the Surat city BJP headquarter.
Paatil praised the new entrants and said, “Sunil Patel and Niket Patel have been doing public service for a long time. They were unhappy with the Congress and its ideology. They have decided to join the BJP to work for the welfare of the people and I welcome them.”
The Congress, however, downplayed the defection and said that the two leaders were not active in the party and their departure will not affect the party.
Surat city Congress president Dhansukh Rajput said, “Sunil Patel was a councillor from Althan twice, about 20 years ago. He is a rich landlord and farmer. He had no role in the party for many years and never came to any party meeting.”
“Niket Patel was given a temporary post of AICC delegate for six months, a few years ago. The party will not suffer any loss because of their exit,” he added.
