After Lightning burns down his cotton crop, Farmer gulps poison in Visavadar

| Updated: October 2, 2021 21:43

Junagadh district has solved the irrigation and drinking water shortage issue due to the recent downpour. The entire district has witnessed adequate rainfall this season. Whereas, Visavadar has turned into Junagadh district’s Cherapunji as it has seen the highest rainfall of all the talukas. The boon of adequate rainfall has turned into a curse due to its excessiveness here. Due to the devastating cotton crop failure Gokal Vekariya, known as Gokalbapa, an elderly farmer, aged 70 who hailed from the Mota Bhalgaam village drank poison and lost his life to his suicidal crisis.

According to the primary details of the incident, the cotton crop of the 70-year-old farmer Gokal Bapa was burnt due to lightning with heavy rains.

He was traumatised by his crop burn. As per the sources, he was alone at his farm when he drank poison and ended his life. The incident came to light when the police took it onto their books. The farmers are stuck in the worst situation due to extravagant rainfall.

As per 2nd October’s report, the rainfall has a 152% incline from the average numbers. The scale marks 67 inches of rain this year, way above the average of 44 inches.

The weather conditions have washed down the taluka, whereas this farmer has tragically ended his own life due to the crop burn by lighting. The state is facing excessive rains in many areas especially the Saurashtra region. It seems high time for the government to take preventive as well as curative measures regarding the same.
