Tributes flood in for former PM, a key reform architect and one of the most distinguished politicians in India, Dr Manmohan Singh. He passed away on Thursday night at the age of 92. Political adversaries, colleagues, and associates all described his death as “a loss to the country”.
Dr Singh was hailed by President Droupadi Murmu as an exceptional politician who was able to successfully combine the fields of administration and academics. She also praised his outstanding modesty, unwavering political career, devotion to the country, and substantial contributions to the Indian economy.
“I pay my respectful homage to one of the greatest sons of Bharat and convey my heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and admirers,” she said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi commended him for his work as an economist and for “leaving a strong imprint on our economic policy over the years” during his tenure as India’s finance minister.
“As our Prime Minister, he made extensive efforts to improve people’s lives,” PM Modi said, adding that “India mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished leaders, Dr Manmohan Singh Ji.”
In addition, PM Modi recalled his numerous interactions with Dr Singh at the time when the former was Gujarat’s Chief Minister and the latter was the nation’s prime minister. “We would have extensive deliberations on various subjects relating to governance,” PM Modi tweeted, sharing pictures of their meetings.
Dr Singh was described as a “distinguished economist who transformed India’s economic landscape” by Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar. The Vice President also mentioned Dr Singh’s numerous accomplishments and efforts in his tribute.
“A Padma Vibhushan awardee and architect of India’s economic liberalisation in 1991, he boldly steered our nation through a critical transition, opening new pathways for growth and prosperity. As the Vice-President of India, I had the privilege to engage in meaningful, insightful interactions with Dr Singh at his residence. His profound understanding of the economy, gentle demeanour and unwavering commitment to India’s progress will forever be etched in my memory”, stated Vice President Dhankhar.
His services to the Indian economy and administration, initially as the Reserve Bank of India’s governor, then as the country’s finance minister, and ultimately as prime minister, were also commended by Home Minister Amit Shah.
Rahul Gandhi, leader of the opposition, said that he has lost a mentor and guide. Additionally, he expressed condolences to Dr Singh’s family. Rahul Gandhi, a former colleague, remarked, “His humility and deep understanding of economics inspired the nation.”
“Undoubtedly, history shall judge you kindly, Dr Manmohan Singh ji,” said Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, echoing Dr Singh’s final remarks when defending the government. Kharge also cited how Dr Singh, the Finance Minister, implemented economic liberalisation and a rights-based welfare paradigm that lifted many Indians out of poverty.
Dr Singh was referred to as a “visionary statesman and a stalwart of Indian politics” by BJP President JP Nadda. He said that generations to come would be inspired by Dr Manmohan Singh’s legacy as they work to improve their country.
Regional CMs, Leaders Offer Condolences
Regional leaders and state Chief Ministers also sent their condolences to the former prime minister.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu referred to Dr Singh’s death as a “loss to the nation” and stated that his contribution has raised millions of people. Samajwadi Party MP and chief Akhilesh Yadav called his passing an “international irreparable loss.”
Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar expressed similar feelings in his condolence remarks, saying, “The demise of Dr Manmohan Singh is an irreparable loss for Indian politics.”
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her “deep shock and sadness.” CM Banerjee stated, “His knowledge and insight were indisputable, and the extent of the financial reforms he implemented in the nation have been widely acknowledged.”
Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan referred to Dr Singh as a respected politician who was dedicated to the principles of secularism and democracy.
Meanwhile, “steady growth, social progress, and reforms that improved the lives of millions” were the highlights of his term, according to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin
Stalin added, “His calm, thoughtful leadership reflected a rare quality – a leader who spoke less but achieved more, driven by action rather than rhetoric.”
Recalling his several encounters with Dr Singh, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said, “He was a true intellectual giant, an accomplished economist, but above all, he was a thorough gentleman, a giant among pygmies. With his death, India has lost a great son.”
Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel expressed his sadness over the death news. “While discharging various responsibilities, he made significant contributions to the development of the country. May God give peace to his soul and give strength to his family and supporters to bear this sorrow,” he said.
Former Delhi Chief Minister and AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal said, “It is impossible to put his qualities of wisdom and simplicity into words.”
