The Sealdah court on Friday granted bail to Abhijit Mondal, the former officer-in-charge of Tala police station and Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, in connection with the rape and murder case of a doctor.
Ghosh was charged with tampering with the evidence in the case, while Mondal was accused of allegedly delaying the filing of a formal complaint on the August 9 rape and murder of the on-duty doctor at RG Kar Hospital.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which is looking into the rape-murder case, detained the two on the high court of Calcutta’s ruling.
According to a counsel for Ghosh, the two accused were granted bail by the additional chief judicial magistrate (ACJM) of Sealdah court since the chargesheet against them was not submitted within the required 90 days.
Outside the court, Mondal’s lawyer informed reporters that he will leave the prison cell where he is being held on judicial remand.
Despite being granted release in the rape-murder case, Ghosh is expected to remain in jail. He is already on judicial remand in another case involving suspected financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
