The great rush for the ‘safe and secure’ jobs continues in Gujarat. At Gujarat University (GU), for the position of 92 clerks, the university authorities have received 8,000 applications or roughly 87 candidates for every seat. Of these, 3,000-odd candidates or 37.5 percent of aspirants have master’s degrees or more than one degree.
Sources said that the number includes 958 with MCom. degree, 580 with MA, 384 with MSc, 167 with MBA, 119 with MCA, 109 with MSW, 41 with ME, 37 with MLib, 20 with MTech, 14 with LLM, 7 with MPharm degrees among others. While one candidate has a degree in health administration, four others come from disciplines such as BDS, BAMS and nursing.
According to the provisions of the sixth pay commission, the junior clerks get Rs 30,000 monthly salary, out of which they get around Rs 25,000 in hand.
Sources said that till last recruitments, there was a straight selection process – often walk-in interviews and a probation period of a year. This year, the high number of candidates has not only forced the authorities to keep the qualification bar higher than the government recruitment but also conduct it in at least two phases of written exam and interview to bring down the number of final candidates.
Himanshu Pandya, the GU vice-chancellor, said that there has been a very high number of applications for the 92 positions advertised. It’s the lure of government jobs that has seen a record number of candidates in almost all the recruitment drives in the past few years, said experts.
