After years of informal separation, a septuagenarian woman from a business family in Vadodara and her 79-year-old husband have mutually agreed to divorce. The settlement includes a payment of Rs 47 lakh from the wife to the husband, covering alimony and lifetime maintenance.
The family court in Vadodara recently approved the joint divorce petition filed by the couple, referred to as Priya and Deep (names changed), according to court documents.
The breakdown of their marriage was attributed to fundamental differences in their views on morality and ethics. “The petitioners have vast differences and disagreements, with both holding diametrically opposite views on matters including boundaries and standards of morality and ethics,” the divorce petition stated.
Deep had originally filed for divorce three years ago, citing desertion, as the couple had been living apart since 2009. Priya consented to the divorce on the condition that Deep also sever his ties with the family business, where he had been a partner.
Court records indicate that Priya claimed it was Deep who chose to live separately and did not take responsibility for their daughters’ weddings. Attempts by family members to reconcile the couple had been unsuccessful.
As part of the divorce settlement, Priya paid Rs 47 lakh to Deep in exchange for alimony, maintenance, and for relinquishing his rights to all movable and immovable assets. Priya continues to live in Vadodara, while Deep has since relocated to Karnataka.
