Gujarat Vidyapith trustees have accepted the resignation of Chancellor Elaben Bhatt, but she will continue as Chancellor till October 19 till the annual convocation at Gujarat Vidyapith will be held. Earlier, her resignation was not accepted, but trust members accepted it after a meeting and requested her to continue till the convocation. Bhatt tendered her resignation from the post citing health concerns.
An official note from the Vidyapith stated that all the members mutually decided to invite Governor Acharya Devvrat as Gujarat Vidyapith’s 12th Chancellor. For the first time the university will have a non-Gandhian and a governor as its chancellor. The meeting lasted for more than four hours. Further to Honor her feelings Elaben’s resignation from the Chancellor post is accepted and she will officially step down on October 19. If Acharya Devvrat accepts the requests, he will become the 12th Chancellor of the university, a post held by Gandhiji, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, DR.Rajendra Prasad and Gandhian like Morarji Desai.
However, there was a lengthy discussion on having Acharya as chancellor. The discussion also saw some opposition about the process and the Vidyapith’s legacy of selecting a chancellor. It was also discussed that while Bhatt will continue on the post till October 19, she may also continue till Vidyapith gets a new chancellor in case Acharya doesn’t agree or the joining gets delayed,” said a well-played source. Those familiar with Vidyapith for a long time also hinted at politicization of Vidyapith, a Gandhian institute, at the behest of BJP leaders.
