In yet another case of illegal emigration from India to the US via Canada, eight bodies were recovered along the banks of St Lawrence River on the Canada-US border, late Friday night. Three of the deceased, according to unconfirmed reports, are from Gujarat. The nationality of the other victims is yet to be ascertained.
Local investigating agencies tracking illegal immigration from Gujarat to foreign shores stated: “strong reason to believe that the three Indians, including a man and his two children – a young boy and a girl – found dead are suspected to be natives of Mehsana district in north Gujarat.”
Official confirmation on the identity of the deceased is awaited by the state police and Canadian authorities investigating the case. Akwesasne Mohawk Police briefed the media that the group was caught in adverse weather “while attempting illegal entry into the US from Canada.”
Local police have interrogated several Gujarati families settled in the area and arrived upon the “reason o believe that three of the eight were from a village in Mehsana district.”
The US Dream continues to lure thousands of Gujaratis to the US. It has been just about a year since the bodies of a family of four, from Dingucha village, were found frozen in -35 °C conditions, while attempting to cross into the US from the Manitoba border.
