The Election Commission of India has today announced the schedule for the upcoming Maharashtra and Jharkhand assembly elections. The term of the Maharashtra assembly is set to end on November 26, while the Jharkhand assembly’s term will conclude on January 5 2025.
In Maharashtra, the ruling Mahayuti alliance, comprising the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Shiv Sena and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), will face the Maha Vikas Aghadi. The Maha Vikas Aghadi alliance includes the Congress, Uddhav Thackeray’s faction of the Shiv Sena and Sharad Pawar’s NCP.
In Jharkhand, the contest is set to be primarily between the BJP and the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM). The Congress will also play a significant role, as it is in alliance with the JMM.
Maharashtra Assembly Elections 2024:
Maharashtra has a total of 288 assembly constituencies, which are divided as follows:
- 234 general seats
- 25 seats reserved for Scheduled Castes (SC)
- 29 seats reserved for Scheduled Tribes (ST)
The state has over 9.63 crore eligible voters, with 4.97 crore male voters and 4.66 crore female voters. Of these, 1.85 crore voters fall within the 20-29 age group. Maharashtra also has over 20.93 lakh first-time voters, aged 18-19, and around 6.36 lakh differently-abled voters.
The Maharashtra elections will take place in a single phase on November 20.
Jharkhand Assembly Elections 2024:
Jharkhand has 81 assembly constituencies:
- 44 general seats
- 28 seats reserved for ST
- 9 seats reserved for SC
The state has approximately 2.6 crore voters, with 1.31 crore male and 1.29 crore female voters. There are 66.84 lakh young voters and around 11.84 lakh first-time voters in the state.
The Jharkhand elections will be conducted in two phases:
- Phase 1: Polling on 13th November
- Phase 2: Polling on 20th November
The counting of votes for both Maharashtra and Jharkhand will take place on November 23.
