A powerful earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.3 jolted southwestern Japan on Wednesday night, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS). Despite the quake’s strength, no tsunami warnings were issued and there have been no immediate reports of damage.
The USGS located the epicentre of the earthquake in a channel that serves as a geographical boundary between the islands of Kyushu and Shikoku. The quake’s epicentre was approximately 18 kilometres (11 miles) west of Uwajima, a city located on the island of Shikoku. The earthquake originated at a depth of about 25 kilometres.
