Tremors were felt in several districts of Himachal Pradesh on Monday afternoon. The quake was felt in Kullu, Lahaul-Spiti, Chamba, Kangra, Hamirpur, and other districts. The first tremor hit at around 3:49 p.m., followed by another tremor at 4:01 p.m.
People rushed out of their homes due to the tremors. Sonam Chhering, Rigzin, and Prakash, residents of Keylong, said that the tremor was quite strong. Employees at the Lahaul-Spiti police station also rushed out of the office in panic and ran towards an open space.
Amit Sharma, Additional District Magistrate (ADM) of Kullu, said that there were no reports of any damage from the earthquake. The National Center for Seismology said that the epicenter of the earthquake was in the Zanskar-Kargil area of Ladakh, at a depth of 10 kilometers below the surface. The magnitude of the earthquake was estimated at 5.5 on the Richter scale. The tremors were also felt in some districts of Himachal Pradesh. Aftershocks were also recorded in Kishtwar-Zanskar.
The tremors caused panic among people. In many people’s homes, furniture fell down. Some people were also injured. Himachal Pradesh is always at risk of earthquakes. In the past few years, earthquakes have been felt several times in Himachal.
