The popular Japanese dog Kabosu, who inspired the Doge meme, died in the early hours of Friday. He was 19. His owner, Atsuko Sato, announced Kabosu’s death in a blog post today, saying that a “farewell party” will be held for him on May 26.
Atsuko adopted Kabosu of the Shiba Inu breed in 2008.
In the post, she said: “Kabosu, today, May 24, at 7.50 am fell into a deep sleep. Kabosu is at rest now.”
“We will be holding a farewell party for Kabo-chan on Sunday, May 26 . It will be held at Flower Kaori in Kotsu no Mori, Narita City, from 1pm to 4pm,” the blog reads.
In 2022, Kabosu was diagnosed with chronic lymphoma, leukaemia, and cholangiohepatitis.
In 2010, images of the Shiba Inu had emerged widely popular on social media, and since then, they have been frequently circulated online as the “Doge” meme. The rise of Dogecoin, a cryptocurrency using an image of Kabosu as its logo, was subsequently sparked by this meme in 2013.
Though at first it was merely a joke currency, its success sparked the creation of further dog-themed cryptocurrencies. In fact, Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, briefly replaced the Twitter logo with a picture of Kabosu at X (formally Twitter) last year. The cryptocurrency’s value shot through the roof as a result.
