With the new Omicron sub-variant threatening to increase infections, India’s readiness to counter the wave is questioned. According to information from the health department of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), Ahmedabad is lagging in the precautionary third Covid dose. AMC data reveals that out of 46,72,118 eligible people across all ages, 36,30,794 (77%) have still not taken the preventive dose.
Complacency may have set in as the fear of Covid abated. Even during the two catastrophic Covid years, 2020 and 2021, the city was lax in taking the vaccines.
As many as 2,67,955 people aged between 15 to 18 years of age were eligible for the first dose. However, 40,556 people were yet to take it. Out of 1,90,000 children in the age group of 12-14 years, 1,49,269 had been vaccinated. The remaining 40,731 unvaccinated children were exposed to risk.
Numbers suggest that the indifference towards vaccines continued in the second phase. Out of 51,59,262 people above 18 years of age, 47,16,188 were given a second dose of Covid vaccination. A significant number of 4,43,074 people didn’t bother about the vaccines.
Meanwhile, the AMC, through the television media, has appealed to the city to take the Covid preventive doses with urgency. The vaccine is available at Urban Health Centres and Community Health Centres in Ahmedabad.
